Help us evaluate how sector complexity is perceived in Air Traffic Control
DataBeacon is developing SIERRA5 – an en-route digital assistant that empowers supervisors to consider not only traffic counts but also traffic interactions, marking a significant advance beyond the current state of the art.
ONERA, the French Aerospace Lab, in collaboration with DataBeacon and Innaxis, is developing an experiment to investigate the evaluation process of ATC sector complexity. The objective of this experiment is to identify and understand key factors in complexity characterization from the perspective of Air Traffic Controllers.
Who can participate and how
We are seeking Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) with varying levels of experience to complete three complexity evaluations of different scenarios.
You will first be asked to fill out a survey covering your expertise and demographics. Then, you can proceed to complete each of the three sessions. In each session, you will watch videos of air traffic within a sector and answer questions about your perception of its complexity. Each session lasts approximately 35 minutes. While you may choose to complete the sessions on separate days, each session must be completed in one sitting.
Where will the study take place and where will the data be stored?
The study will be conducted entirely remotely on your own computer. You will receive a link with detailed instructions, as well as access to the sessions and questionnaires.
Participation is completely voluntary, and your data will be anonymized. You have the right to join or withdraw from the study at any time and for any reason. Your data will be used exclusively by the ONERA research team and will not be transferred outside the country. Only analyzed results will be shared within the European Project.

About SafeTeam
SafeTeam progresses on the human factors aspects on the use of digital assistants to aviation, including a deeper understanding on the technology and processes that will facilitate the adoption of AI tools and integration into operations, enhancing human cognitive abilities and potentially automation. The project will also look into approval and certification issues, concretely on aspects related to the human ability to operate sophisticated AI tools and explainability of AI operations.
This project has been funded by the European Union under Grant Agreement 101069877.
